Educating the next generation of physicians in hospice and palliative care
... so that more Americans can receive the benefits of interdisciplinary quality care when confronted with life-limiting illness and at the end of life.
Goals
- To train physicians to demonstrate competence in specialist-level expertise in palliative care by developing academic, clinical, research and administrative skills that are consistent with the practice, development, improvement and leadership in palliative medicine.
- To help physicians develop a broad base of knowledge and analytical skills in palliative medicine. The program emphasizes communication, care planning, symptom management, relief of suffering and mentoring decision-making, particularly as they apply to patients and families challenged with life-limiting illness or at the end of life.
Participants
- Must be graduates of an ACGME-accredited program in internal or family medicine and a licensed physician in the United States.
- Will spend a dynamic year in training in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospital, ambulatory and community.
- Will provide care for individuals from diverse socioeconomic levels, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and geographic areas.
- Will experience the benefits of education and mentoring from other committed faculty including Martha L. Twaddle, MD, chief medical officer of Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter, and Catherine Deamant MD, senior attending physician at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
- Will be board eligible in palliative medicine at the completion of their fellowship.
