AAHPM Honors Dr. Martha Twaddle
January 2005
Martha L. Twaddle, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, chief medical officer, received the first annual Josefina B. Magno Distinguished Hospice Physician Award, presented in January 2005 at the Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Established to honor the memory of Dr. Magno, who died in 2004, the award recognizes a hospice medical director or hospice physician who:

  • Provides the highest quality services and most innovative programs.
  • Demonstrates exemplary dedication to the practice of palliative medicine in a hospice setting.

Dr. Magno immigrated to the United States from the Philippines in the 1960s and took a job as a physician at Georgetown University Hospital. Her views on patient care were drastically altered when she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and a radical mastectomy, then trained in oncology at Georgetown.

Working with cancer patients encouraged Dr. Magno to co-found Hospice of Northern Virginia, one of the country’s first hospice programs. She was the first executive director of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
