Patient & Family Care Services
We require and provide comprehensive training for volunteers who support and provide companionship for patients and their families.
Patient Support: Volunteers visit patients where they live, whether a private residence or a senior care facility. The visit may mean simply sitting with a patient to provide a comforting presence. Or the volunteer might play a game of cards or reminisce with the patient. Patient care volunteers also support both staff and patients at our hospice inpatient unit in Skokie.
Caregiver Respite: Volunteers provide respite for caregivers, staying in the home while family members run errands, keep appointments or take some restorative time alone.
Vigils: In senior care facilities, volunteers participate in bedside vigils when a patient’s death is imminent.
Bereavement Support
- Families with Children—volunteers assist master’s prepared counselors with support groups for children and teens who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
- CampCare—at our annual summer grief support camp, volunteers can be counselors or support staff.
Office Support
Front Desk: Volunteers staff our Glenview campus reception desk Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., greeting and announcing visitors.
Lifts: Volunteers get together regularly to assemble packets, mailings and forms that are important to Midwest CareCenter operations.
Special Department Projects: Volunteers apply their unique skills to assist various departments with a broad array of projects.
Community & Special Projects
Events: A variety of friend- and fundraising events are held at Midwest CareCenter or other venues, and we often need volunteers to assist with setup, registration, staffing, etc.
Health Fairs/Expos: Volunteers accompany and assist professional staff at community events to spread the word about Midwest CareCenter programs.
Memorial Services: Volunteers help out at our memorial services by welcoming guests as greeters or donating baked goods. These events give family members of those who have died in our hospice program the opportunity to celebrate the lives of their loved ones.
Caring Kids in Action: Young people and adults can provide service to older adults and hospice patients through the activities of Caring Kids in Action.
Speakers Bureau: Presentations skills workshops help volunteers hone the skills necessary to become an effective Midwest CareCenter representative and speaker during community presentations.
